The Upper West Side is a popular neighborhood, with many of its residents working in Midtown and Lower Manhattan. It has the reputation of being NYC’s cultural and intellectual center (with Columbia University to its north, and Lincoln Center at its south).

Historically, the boundaries of the Upper West Side run from 59th St. in the south, to 110th St. in the north, and is bounded on the west by the Hudson River and to the east by Central Park. Morningside Heights runs from 110th St. to 122nd St., and includes the main Columbia University campus. Morningside Heights also includes Barnard College, Bank Street College of Education, Manhattan School of Music, Teachers College, and the Jewish and Union Theological Seminaries. The area north of W 96th St. and east of Broadway is also known as Manhattan Valley.

Transit and Convenience Abound in Upper West Side Neighborhoods

Two subway lines serve the UWS: the #1, 2, 3 trains run along Broadway, and the A, B, C, D trains run along Central Park West.  There are multiple bus routes traveling north-south and east-west.

Broadway runs diagonally north-south through the neighborhood. It has many large brand name stores and small independent shops, along with amenities such as movie theaters. A few of the famous name brands you’ll find here include: Barnes & Noble, Shakespeare & Co., Zabar’s, Fairway, & Grey’s Papaya.

Central Park with all its beauty and facilities can easily be accessed from the Upper West Side. The Hudson River Greenway project, along the river edge of Riverside Park, is a popular route for pedestrians and cyclists, and provides spectacular vistas across the Hudson. The section around the 72nd Street Boat Basin (with its restaurants, baseball fields and landscaped parkland) is a popular weekend spot for relaxing.
