I don’t know about you, but I am a big fan of unique and unforgettable architecture. When I see a massive building that is so detailed and perfect, it makes me wonder if magic actually exists. Harry Potter, is that you? The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is one of those pieces of architecture that makes my jaw drop. With its incredible scale and intricate detail, it is hard to walk by without gawking. This cathedral is more modern than others in terms of when it was built. Construction started in the late 19th century and the full length was done in 1941. Construction was not entirely complete but because of the Second World War it had to be slowed down. Since then, the cathedral has had on and off construction, proving how new it is to the world, especially when compared to ancient churches from Europe.
The cathedral has grown to be a massive monument, but also has become a community gathering place in times of struggle and in times of happiness. At the end of World War two mass amounts of people collected at St.John’s for a Thanksgiving feast. On September 11, 2001, hundreds of people gathered in the church to find solace in one another. However, later that year the cathedral was partially destroyed in a fire and much of it was closed down until the re-opening in 2008. The cathedral has created a rich history for itself despite being barely 100 years old.
I believe that the draw of the cathedral is how stunning it is. It has a lot to offer in terms of events like camps, performances, services, and even has a school, but I think the massive structure and specific details are what draws people in. Every single inch of the cathedral has been designed to tell stories.
Many different architects have added to the beauty of the building and it is amazing to see in person. I would suggest going here to anyone who visits New York, not just to people in Northern Manhattan. It is a must-see and super easy to check out.
