Schatzie the Butcher and Richie’s Burger Joint
Do you ever have those days when you are just craving a big juicy burger? Your mouth is watering and you know you don’t want anything fancy or hipster, just a classic fat beef burger. Well, in that case, you should head over to Schatzie’s at 2665 Broadway between 101st and 102nd street. This place serves classic burgers which you can pile high with your choice of toppings. And if you’re not feeling beef you’ll have to pick between their delicious turkey burger, their perfectly cooked chicken, brisket, and southern style pulled pork so, good luck picking. As a reminder, do not forget the fries! They’re perfectly crispy and the portions are quite generous. Now these are just a few of the things on their menu, but the meat is some of the best in the area so you’ll need to visit more than once.
Just a heads up though, this is NOT your classic New York City burger joint. To be honest, I don’t think it’s anywhere’s classic burger joint. This place is special. For starters, it’s also a butcher shop. This place feels like no other that I’ve been to. For starters, when you walk in you are greeted extremely warmly by Richie, the son of Schatzie. Schatzie runs the butcher shop which is directly to the right when you walk in. Richie is in charge of the burger joint. As you sit, troubling over what to order, you may here Schatzie and Richie calling over to each other and joking. This burger joint is family owned and operated and they bring that into their service. They make you feel like a part of the family. Be ready to be friendly and open because that is what these guys are! You’ll probably find yourself chowing down on a juicy burger with fries and a milkshake while in conversation with Richie about something going on in the news, a basketball game, or even something random. Schatzie’s is a great place to feel like you are a part of a small community even in a city as big as New York. Also, if you want to test your burger making skills, all the meat comes directly from the butcher shop so you can take some home with you or order some for delivery.
