Shake, shake, shake on over to this awesome burger place in Harlem. After opening its flagship store at 100 West 124th in 2013, the restaurant was extremely well received for both its food and its celebration of Harlem’s culture and community. The décor of Harlem Shake centers around a retro theme that allows customers to feel transported in time. The walls are covered with signed celebrity photos, an afro wall, vintage JET magazine covers, and images of Mr or Miss Harlem Shake.
Who is Mr or Miss Harlem Shake? Every year 5 men and 5 women from the Harlem community are picked and customers vote to make one of them the face of the restaurant for the next year. Recently, the first Mr. Harlem Shake was chosen, Marco Glorious Khare. He is rewarded fortune ($1,000 to the charity of his choice), fame (a photo on the Wall of Fame and a ride on a Float during the African American Day parade), and feast (a year of free burgers!) Anyone can enter to win and this allows the community to be involved in the business.
Now for the food. It is so so SO good! Made with custom Pat LaFrieda patties in a classic New York style, every burger is a treat. They have their own special Shake sauce but you can customize the burger to your liking. They also have options for vegetarians (or vegans if you take the cheese off) with their house-made veggie patty. Don’t forget to pair your burger or all-beef hot dog with some fries because they are cooked to perfection and nice and crispy. They have so many other options for food but one thing you cannot miss out on are their milkshakes. They are so good and make me feel like I’m in an old-fashioned shake shop. Harlem Shake is a great staple to the neighborhood and everyone should try it at least once, but I doubt you will only try it once because it is THAT good.
